Subject: Racing on the last day of the TDF

I read that Cadel Evans was trying to decide if he was going to aggressively race the last day of the TDF since he was only 23 seconds behind Contador. Is there some sort of rule (written or unwritten) that says you're not allowed to attack on the last day if you're in contention for the yellow jersey or is it just up to the riders themselves? Perhaps he thought that no one would ever speak to him again if he did attack (and take the yellow)on the last day? I was kind of hoping that he would. I thought that maybe if you're less than 30 seconds off the lead then you can go for it if you want. Does anyone REALLY know what the correct protocol is in these cases? Just curious.
