Not bad for a guy who used to race in OBRA events... Many records fall as Larsen, Fuhr sweep Isuzu Ironman Lake Placid By Kelly Mione for Ironmanlive.com on Mon, Jul 30th 2001 (7:04 AM). In a day filled with record-breaking performances, Steve Larsen of Davis, Calif., put on an amazing display of athletic ability to win the third annual Isuzu Ironman USA Lake Placid triathlon. Ideal race conditions at the 20001 Isuzu Ironman USA Lake Placid saw new course records in every category (swim, bike, run, overall) except the women’s bike. Larsen smashed both the bike course record (4:33:23) and the course record (8:33:11) to post his first-ever Ironman victory. What makes Larsen’s victory even more impressive is the fact that it was the first Ironman event of his career, and only his third triathlon of any length. Larsen, a two-time NORBA Cross Country Mountain Biking Champion, came out of the water in 132nd place overall, but quickly hammered his way through the field to take control of the race on the bike. By the time he reached T2, he had a 15-minute lead headed out on the marathon portion of the event. U.S. Olympian Ryan Bolton (Boulder, Colo.), also competing in his first Ironman, made up ground on Larsen with a record-setting run (2:49:52), but couldn’t catch him, settling for second place in his Ironman debut. Cameron Widoff (Boulder, Colo.), last year’s champion, finished third (8:55:07), with Austria’s Norbert Domnik was fourth (8:56:50) and Hideya Miyazuka of Japan finished fifth (9:05:49). ===== Jonathan C.
