I tend to find that whenever a U.S. airline hears the word bike, they immediately charge a fee which ranges from $50 to $80 each way. It does not seem to matter what case it is in. Since most of the U.S. airlines are looking for additional revenue, they will use any pretext to charge an additional fee. I have had them try to charge me a fee for my bike which has couplers and fits in a suitcase. Now I do not mention that there is a bike inside.
