Ok, two confessions. First, I moved here from California. Second, when I raced there, I kind of liked looking up my USCF national ranking. Daily. As a master's beginner woman, though, I'm pretty sure I was the only one who cared.

What I don't miss: paying $60 for a license, and over $40 for each race, which were substantively no different than OBRA events. My race expenses come directly out of the family milk money, and I can do more races and have more fun, for half the cost. And, in the less famous categories, there are larger and more challenging fields.

From my back of the pack vantage, accessibility develops more riders than a national ranking system.
