OBRA rules are:
"10.5 - ROAD COMPETITIONS
The numbers shall be a minimum of 12 cm high on a minimum 20 cm by 20 cm
background."

The current numbers are actually a bit under size at 10 cm. The background
is 20 x 28 cm. The wider width is needed to accommodate the 4 digit numbers
which are needed because the membership is more that 1,000.

The size of the number is important since the resolution of any way that we
record them is limited, video, digital line scanner or film slit lens.
Background is important to as the numbers just won't show up on camera if
there is not a surrounding border.

We could see smaller numbers but only over more narrow finish lines. The
bottom line is ... Size matters. Placement matters too but with inadequate
size you can place however you want and the number will be unreadable at the
far side of a wide finish line like PIR.

Are you sure size is the problem? I think it's number placement. It is my
opinion that they're a little too big to place properly.

Looking at my 2007 race number, the actual number takes up 27% of the
surface area. There's an awful lot of filler there.

The USCF regulation says numbers should be 20cm wide. Ours are closer to
28cm. Here's what I found in the USCF rulebook:

"...The figures should be black, and be 12 to 14 cm high on a light colored
background 20 cm or less in height and 20 cm wide."

So our numbers are the maximum height and well above the stated width
parameter.

If Eric complains imagine what it is like for me. He is a tad bit larger
than me.

I would argue that the numbers definitely should NOT shrink. The OBRA
regulation size mirrors the USCF regulation size. At the current size the
are still hard to read on the camera at venues with wide finish lines like
PIR. If we were to shrink the number size I think we would have to
simultaneously have a rule that limited finish line width. This is the main
reason why they can get by with smaller numbers at Euro Pro races, they
limit the finish line width. Narrowing finish lines would not only be
technically difficult but would also present safety issues.

While talking about change, I still think those OBRA numbers need to shrink.

I believe more people could put them on correctly if they weren't too big.
