You make a very good, valid point. I ride my bike to work everyday on the bike path next to the Columbia Slough where the bunnies play and the heron sit. I see dogs off their leash all the time and I TOLERATE it. Why? Because I have to see these people every day. Some of them are very kind and pull their dogs back and they might behave others are just a nuisance. But we both live on this earth together and I think we can get along. But in a park situation I am afraid that dogs need to observe the laws and be on a leash. NOT ALL DOGS ARE BAD....but the rules apply to every dog. It is hard to justify bending the laws for the good and bad dogs that behave etc. Truth is....it needs to be responsible owners. I kind of wished I could have spanked the owner of the dog for misbehaving that caused the bike crash!!!! Have you ever thought why we do it. It is for the simple pleasure, joy and excitement that it brings to the dog. The ability to run free. I see it as the same feeling I get from riding down the street, instead of driving. Do I do this to angry motorist, no? Do I let my dog off leash to anger other people, no? I do have a responsibility to keep my dog under control though. But because a few dog owners and bike owners act stupid, doesn't mean rest off us have to pay for it. I will continue to let my dog off leash in a responsible manner, because I love to see her eyes light up when I do. And I will continue to ride my bike no matter how much motorist wish me off the road, because they find me annoying.
