In November of 2002, I had a spinal cord injury which left me still able to walk and ride my bike, but unable to run or continue to race. Since that time I have raised money for the Challenged Athletes Foundation ( www.challengedathletes.org <http://www.challengedathletes.org/> ) which gives grants to athletes with disabilities. The grants help these athletes purchase things that may normally be out of reach financially such as hand cycles, specialized prosthetic limbs, coaching, and traveling to paralympic events and qualifiers. Last year I had an informal auction of several signed cycling jerseys and along with donations from family and friends I managed to raise $3000. I have a few signed jerseys for auction again and three of them are framed. I will post them for my second annual auction in the next few days after I take pictures of them. For those of you that are home today, there will be two challenged athletes on Oprah today at 4pm. Both of their stories are very inspirational and this year they were co-winners of the Arthur Ashe Award which is given annually to "individuals whose contributions transcend sport". I realize that many people have maxed out their charitable donations for the year with LAF, Race for the Cure, Leukemia/Lymphoma Society, and hurricane relief but if you might want a signed jersey from some domestic pro's and (hopefully, I am getting a Chris Horner jersey too), please keep an eye out for my next email and place a bid on my jersey's.
