Everyone contributing to this thread needs to go back to work and stop wasting your employers dollars. If you are self employed or at home your time would be better spent riding your bike not typing about it.

A moving violation is a moving violation. Are they going to up the fines on large trucks that run red lights? The big truck's impact to public safety is much greater than a honda Civic's.

I agree, Pete --- except that as it currently stands the fine for a cyclist
& a motorist running a red light is exactly the same. Which, when viewed in
terms of the risk to public safety, is ridiculous. Fine schedules for
traffic violations were increased in the last legislative session, with (for
Portland at least) the increased income devoted to a traffic safety fund
(for enforcement, education, & some engineering). In the current
legislature i saw last week a bill had been introduced in the State Senate
to reduce the traffic fines on cyclists --- an excellent idea.
