I agree, we all need to get along and make more of an effort to do so. That said, we also have laws for a reason. So we are all on the same page. It says right in the bicycle manual that if somebody is trying to pass you where it is not safe to do so, where there is no shoulder to move over onto, and you can keep pace and not obstruct traffic-you are supposed to move into the middle of the lane so they do not have the opportunity to pass you. It's just not safe for anybody. Cuz inevetibly, if they think they havbe 1mm of daylight they'll try to squeeze their car between you and the oncoming traffic leaving 0 margin for error. Not to mention going over the center line. What if a car was coming up the hill doing exactly the same thing? What then? The cars would swerve to their right most likely to avoid hitting the oncoming car and hit the cyclist who was to their right. I had a friend who lost alot of clout in his case when he got hit by a car because he was NOT claiming his rightful place on the road. He was riding on the right side where he should've been in the middle of the road. After getting run over, and breaking a few teeth and his arm, the cop told him he actually write him a ticket for riding where he was. That is why there are laws. I totally agree tht it helps nobody,to go looking for trouble, or taking unnecessary risks. But at the same time, we all need to obey the laws to cover our asses, for one. And to claim our place on the road. So when something happens, I've got T's crossed and my I's dotted. That's what I think. |
