I remember from my junior racing being restricted to a 52x16. It was a pain in the ass, gave a clear advantage to the heavier kids on downhills, and I ALWAYS trained with normal gearing anyway because I TRAINED WITH NORMALLY GEARED PEOPLE. Kids are not idiots, and you will not see too many of them pushing 53x12. If you do, then they are not very interested in cycling or their own physiology to begin with, and won't be racing long. I certainly taught myself without "jeopardizing my knees" - All of them can read any of hundreds of guidebooks, or simply watch other riders. And that is exactly what anyone interested in racing has and will do - that is how I learned, and I am not special. THAT said, I would like to invoke a 3 beer maximuim on all adults because I see that some people might be drinking inefficiently or hurting themselves; they need to learn suppleness with a pint or two before they can graduate. It is for your own good folks, because you probably can't be relied on to teach yourself the proper method. Stop making the rules do the work for you, get out and TALK TO A JUNIOR if you see a problem or have a concern. Brough to you by the Buttitta Foundation for Ethical Individualism.
