Gorge Protections

Dear George Schreck,

Stop Anti-Gorge Legislators from Weakening Gorge Protections

Take Action to follow up on an egregious Anti-Gorge Senate
Hearing

On August 18th, foes of Columbia River Gorge protections, led by
Senator Gary George, held a so-called Senate "hearing" which
provided a platform for activists opposed to Columbia Gorge
protections to criticize the National Scenic Area Act and the
Columbia River Gorge Commission, as well as Oregon's land use
laws in general.

Groups opposed to land use planning and Gorge protection, like
Oregonians in Action (OIA) and Columbia Gorge United (CGU),
played a significant role in bringing this hearing to fruition.
The entire hearing was heavily slanted toward weakening Gorge
protections because these groups have worked closely with
committee chair Senator George.

These groups are out of step with most Oregonians. In fact, most
Oregonians overwhelmingly believe in protecting the Gorge, so it
is very important that we get our voices into the record.

It is clear that Senators George (R- Newberg), Bill Fisher (R-
Roseburg), and Ted Ferrioli (R- John Day) held the hearing to
lay the groundwork for legislation that will weaken Gorge
protections during the 2005 Oregon legislative session -
probably in the form of de-funding the Gorge Commission or other
efforts to weaken Oregon's land use laws. We must not let this
happen!

We urge you to send a letter to the Senate Natural Resources
Interim Committee by September 17, 2004. Your letter will then
be included as public testimony in the hearing record.

----THIS LETTER WILL BE SENT IN YOUR NAME----
Dear [decision maker name automatically inserted here],

Thank you for the opportunity to provide written testimony on
the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area and the Gorge
Commission. Please add these comments to the official record and
include them in the findings of fact.

The Columbia River Gorge is a natural scenic wonder that must be
protected for future generations to experience. The National
Scenic Area Act protects the Gorge from over development and
also helps support the Gorge economy. Since the Gorge Act was
passed in 1986, the federal government has provided $62 million
to purchase land from willing sellers and $36 million for
economic and recreational development. The Gorge Act also
protects property rights by ensuring that every land owner has
an economic use for their property.

The Gorge Commission is the agency most responsible for ensuring
that the Columbia Gorge is protected. The Oregon Legislature
must provide necessary funding for the Gorge Commission to
carryout its duty to protect the Columbia River Gorge. The
Legislature should also advocate for more federal funding to
purchase key lands from willing sellers, compensate the counties
for lost property tax revenue and to stimulate economic
development in urban areas of the Gorge.

Thank you for including these comments in the official record
and in the findings of fact.

----END OF LETTER TO BE SENT----

Sincerely,
George Schreck
