Subject: cyclocross grand prize -- The Money or the Car????

Dear Cross Crusade Riders and Fans,

I know you all want to know whether I decided to take the money or the car in the grand prize drawing held at the Cyclocross Award Ceremony on December 12th. This is going to sound like a fairy tale, and it is. First, you should know that I religiously entered the drawing every week for ten weeks. Because our 1992 Honda Accord has over 183,000 miles on it, we really needed a car. Also, our Toyota Previa came from Russ Humberston's Beaverton Toyota -- we are regular customers in the Service Department. So, I figured we deserved to win the prize -- but, of course, was shocked to win! I even went so far as to have Russ bless my entry at the Estacada Timber Park race.

When it came time for the winner's name to be drawn for the car, I was reading Velo News on the floor hoping to win Best Fan. After three winners' names were called, none of whom were present to win, I was oblivious to the sound of my own name being called as the winner who was present!

The rest is like a blur to me. Russ tried to hand me $2500 in cash. Everyone was yelling, "Take the cash!" My husband and I stepped outside to pinch ourselves to be sure this was real. I hugged a bunch of people and stood around with my mouth open, incredulous.

The rest of the story will sound like an infomercial for Russ Humberston's dealership. I swear that it is true and that I have not been paid to say these things. When Russ realized we really needed a car, he offered a third option which was to apply the money towards any car on their lot. We got the red carpet treatment from the sales staff and came home today with a slightly used silver 2003 Camry LE. We will be offering rides to all who have asked, "Did you get the car????"

I had to make a memory out of this. To take the money would have been nice, but it would have disappeared quickly and there would be nothing to tell the grandkids someday. I had to do something special with it.

We'll get a cyclocross sticker and put it in the rear window so you can see us coming. The car is so nice that we have to keep the Honda to haul Taylor's bikes around. We cannot believe our good fortune, and thank all of you for your enthusiasm about our prize.

The moral of the story is: YOU MUST BE PRESENT TO WIN -- in life!

Sally Kneuven
