I'd like to weigh in here. I used to promote Mtn bike races here in Oregon. I have helped with many Mudslingers and state championships, and finally headed up 3 years of Shredtopia! We raced 2 years in Corvallis and a final year out in Yamhill as a test venue for the World Masters games. Did we make any money? Yes. We averaged a net profit of about $700 for each race, the final one in Yamhill actually cost us money due to all the land use fees from the BLM and Tree farm owners, and the Flying M Ranch virtually bent us over. This with 4-6 people working at least 20 hrs a week from early spring to about 2 weeks past the race date. I should also mention that the final race in Yamhill logged nearly 30k on the odometer of my car, for which I got NADA in return. Now, with this "profit" we always used it to get our team to Norba Nationals to defray the costs for our racers. My favorite was helping Ryah Radomski get to Park City for the Norba finals in 1997, where he literally kicked ass on the field, garnering himself a coaches selection to the World Championships Team as an espoir. So you see, as far as profits go, I got rich with experiences and rewarded with others successes. Those of you that take the time to thank the promoters, (especially the Murray family) are champs in my book, because for every one of you that makes that effort, there are ten out there working on the belief that the racing community owes them something. That having been said, I cannot remember details of any single conflict, but can detail ten or more genuine efforts to thank myself and my fellow promoters. So THANK YOU to all the race promoters out there! YOU ROCK!!!
