Extend the season into December

Doug Bowman

October 23, 2017 at 2:39 PM

I moved here 3 years ago from Michigan and was a little despondent to find the cross season was essentially over by early November (admittedly there was a race here in Corvallis that I did not see in December that year) Psychocross does run into late November. In Michgan we almost always had one cross race in the snow and that was always fun to race in different conditions, I do not personally see much difference between November and December weather here.

Some Guy

October 23, 2017 at 12:12 PM

I want to seize this opportunity to encourage everyone looking to ride at race pace in December to come out and train at race intensity on The Sauvie Shootout! We ride year-round at a VERY spirited intensity. A major goal of The Shootout is to help bond the cycling community, grow OBRA membership, race participation and make OBRA races of all disciplines even better!

We meet for coffee around 8:30 and depart promptly at 9AM every Sunday from Ovation Coffee 941 NW Overton. Join the Facebook page for details and updates: https://www.facebook.com/groups/sauvieislandshootout/

Not by OBRA, but seemingly by OBRA's market.

You're right, Ron. I guess it's just a question of what we think are
"ideal" conditions. For me, the muddier the better.

No Craig. We are wimp racers! It is just too nasty outside in winter!
Actually I would do one in Dec or Jan. However as someone who has volunteered at races, setting up and tearing down a course at that time of year would be COLD and probably WET. That would be a big message for a promoter is racers did not show and make it worthwhile. Oh well.
If you build a trail, people will ride it. But more people will ride it when the conditions are ideal.

That's a pretty odd comment if you look at the schedule. First road race is March, last is August. That's 6 months.

First 'cross race is September, and the last (a single race) is in early December. That's not even 3-1/2 months. Even MTB season is longer than 'cross, with races from April through October.

Promoters all say that Oregon racers won't race after November and I'm sure they have the data to back that statement. If we want to race in December, I guess we have to prove to promoters that we can be as tough as the Washington racers. They also start in September, but they have six races in December (only taking the weekends of Christmas and New Year's off) and one in January. Starting next year, USA Cycling is bringing nationals back to December. So that won’t be a problem any longer.

"By all appearances that plan is already being implemented by OBRA."

That's a pretty odd comment if you look at the schedule. First road race is
March, last is August. That's 6 months.

First 'cross race is September, and the last (a single race) is in early
December. That's not even 3-1/2 months. Even MTB season is longer than
'cross, with races from April through October.

Promoters all say that Oregon racers won't race after November and I'm sure
they have the data to back that statement. If we want to race in December,
I guess we have to prove to promoters that we can be as tough as the
Washington racers. They also start in September, but they have six races in
December (only taking the weekends of Christmas and New Year's off) and one
in January. The Washington State Championship is a full month after ours,
on December 17. That works nicely for Washington racers who plan to attend
nationals, which is in Reno in early January. How is an Oregon racer
supposed to compete at natz without any racing for the 6 weeks leading up
to it? I guess they race in Washington.

Northern California's schedule is similar in December and January. NorCal
and Washington show up to race when the weather gets bad, but
Oregonians don't. Would we, if we had the opportunity?

If everyone is worried about overlapping with road and MTB then why not have more races in November and December? The weather in Oregon certainly supports it.
